Laser test grid generator

Enter power and speed, download the SVG, give each color its values in your laser software – and find the best setting for a new material.

Grid

Which color has which setting?
#PowerSpeed

Step by step

  1. Decide which range to test: enter the lowest and highest power under “Power from %” and “to %”, and the slowest and fastest value for speed. The values in between are spread evenly and rounded to whole numbers.
  2. Choose the unit your laser software uses (mm/min or mm/s) so the labels in the grid match your settings.
  3. Set the cell size. Small cells save material and time, larger cells show differences in color and depth more clearly. The total size of the grid in mm appears below the preview.
  4. Download the SVG and import it into your laser software. Open “Which color has which setting?” below the preview and transfer power and speed from the table to each color.
  5. Run the grid on an offcut of exactly the material you plan to use, and note the best cell together with the material and laser type.

What you can use it for

  • New material: Before using a new wood, leather or coated board for a real piece, the grid shows which combination engraves cleanly and which one scorches.
  • Cut test: “Outline only (cut)” produces outlines only, so you can check at which power and speed a material is cut all the way through.
  • New laser or module: After switching to a stronger laser module or a new machine, the old values often no longer fit. A grid on your usual material quickly shows the new values.
  • Fine-tuning: Once you have found a rough range, create a second grid with a narrow range around the best cell to hit the setting more precisely.

Finding the right setting

  1. Set up the grid: rows are power, columns are speed.
  2. Load the SVG into LightBurn or another laser program. Every cell is on its own color, i.e. its own layer.
  3. Give each color the values from the table below the preview and run the grid.
  4. The best-looking cell shows you the setting for this material.

Many laser programs have a limited number of layer colors (LightBurn: 30). With more than 30 cells, colors repeat.

Frequently asked questions

Which values should I enter?

For diode lasers on wood roughly 20–100 % power and 1000–6000 mm/min. Start low on sensitive materials like paper and leather.

Does it work with xTool Creative Space?

Yes, the SVG can be imported. You set the values per object there.

How many cells can the grid have?

Up to 10 rows and 10 columns, so 100 cells at most. From 31 cells on, colors repeat and the tool points this out.

What is the difference between “Filled” and “Outline only”?

Filled cells are areas the laser engraves line by line. With “Outline only”, each cell is a thin line the laser traces – meant for cut tests.

Which layer are the labels on?

The numbers and the heading are black, so they share the color of the first cell. To laser them with their own values or leave them out, assign them to another layer or delete them in your laser software.

Why is the grid larger than the cells added up?

There is a gap between cells and room for labels at the edge. The status line shows the actual total size in mm.

Will the size be correct in my laser software?

The SVG contains width and height in millimeters. Programs that read this open the grid at the right size. Still, check the dimensions briefly after importing.

Can I also test passes or line interval?

No, the grid only varies power and speed. Other settings such as passes are set in your laser software, the same for all layers.
