Step by step

  1. Sign a few times on a sheet and pick the best signature. Photograph only that one, so no other strokes, lines or paper edges are in the frame.
  2. Drop the photo. The paper is removed right away and the result is cropped tightly around the signature, with a narrow margin.
  3. Move the “Sensitivity” slider: further right also keeps fine, lighter strokes; further left removes grey shadows and paper texture.
  4. Under “Signature color”, choose either “Uniform” with a color of your choice or “As photographed” to keep the real tone of your pen.
  5. Check the preview – the checkerboard pattern stands for transparent areas – and download the PNG.

What you can use it for

  • Letters, quotes and invoices: Put your signature under a document you've written yourself before sending it as a PDF. It looks more personal than a typed name.
  • Email signature: Place the signature as a small image below your closing line, for example in newsletters or personal messages to clients.
  • Filling in forms on a computer: In PDF programs that let you insert images, place the signature where it belongs on a completed form.
  • Signing photos and artwork: Photographers, illustrators and painters use their signature as a mark on images and prints, for example as the logo in the “Add watermark” tool.

How it works

  1. Sign with a dark pen on white paper.
  2. Photograph it in daylight without shadows.
  3. Drop the photo, adjust sensitivity, download the PNG.

The PNG can be inserted as an image in Word, LibreOffice and many PDF programs. Especially with your own signature it matters that it isn't uploaded but stays on your device.

An inserted image signature is not a qualified electronic signature. For contracts that require one, use a certified service.

Frequently asked questions

Is my signature uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser.

Is it legally a signature?

It's fine for many everyday documents. Not where the law requires a handwritten or qualified electronic signature.

Why is the PNG smaller than my photo?

The result is cropped to the signature. Very large photos are also reduced to at most 2400 pixels on the long side. That is usually plenty for documents and emails.

There are grey spots or lines in the result – what can I do?

These are usually shadows, creases or the lines of ruled or squared paper. Move the sensitivity to the left. If that doesn't help, take a new photo on smooth, unlined paper.

Parts of the signature are missing – why?

Those strokes were too light for the setting. Move the sensitivity to the right, or sign with a darker, bolder pen.

What does “No signature detected” mean?

The tool found no areas clearly darker than the paper. Increase the sensitivity, or photograph the signature with more contrast, for example written with a black felt-tip pen.

Why is the crop larger than the signature itself?

The crop is based on everything darker than the paper. If there are other strokes on the photo or a shadow at the edge of the sheet, the cut-out gets larger accordingly. Photograph closer, or on a blank sheet.

Which color works best?

A dark blue resembles a ballpoint pen, which is why it is the default. Black also suits formal documents. “As photographed” keeps the tone of your own pen.
