Step by step
- Drop your portrait photo and pick the right size under “Template”: 35 × 45 mm, 2 × 2 inch or job application photo 4 : 5.
- Drag the photo with your finger or mouse until the face sits in the dashed oval. The upper blue line marks the top of the head, the lower one the chin.
- Adjust the size with the “Size” slider, with the mouse wheel on a computer or two fingers on a phone. If your head is slightly tilted, correct it with “Rotate” by up to 15 degrees.
- Tick “Make background light gray (AI)” if needed. The AI then replaces the background behind you with an even light gray.
- Use “Download photo” for the single image or “4 × 6 in print sheet” for a sheet with several photos. The status line then tells you how many fit on the sheet.
What you can use it for
- Photo for your CV: The 4 : 5 template gives you a portrait in a typical CV format. Insert the single image straight into your document without cropping it yourself first.
- Visa application with photo upload: Many countries ask for the photo as a file in the online application. The single image has the right proportions. Still check the portal's requirements, for example on pixel size or file size.
- Cards for clubs and institutions: Membership, library, student or season cards often require a passport-size photo, but not a biometric one. A self-made photo is usually fine here.
- Several prints at once: Need a few photos, say for the application and a copy? Print a 4 × 6 in sheet and cut out the pictures. A print in this size is usually inexpensive.
Check the rules first
Requirements differ by country and document. Some countries, such as Germany for ID cards and passports, only accept photos submitted digitally by certified studios. Always check the official requirements for your document.
Tips for a good photo
- In front of a light, plain wall, standing away from it to avoid shadows.
- Light from the front, for example facing a window.
- Camera at eye level, at least one meter away.
Frequently asked questions
How do I print the sheet?
Order the sheet as a regular 4 × 6 inch (10 × 15 cm) photo print. Don't choose “fit to page”, or the size will be wrong.
Will every authority accept it?
No. Rules differ by country and document. Check the official requirements before you print.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser.
How many photos are on the print sheet?
That depends on the template. As many images fit as possible with a small gap. The exact number is shown in the status line after downloading.
What are the thin gray lines on the sheet for?
They mark the edge of each photo, so you can cut the pictures out neatly with scissors or a trimmer.
What resolution do the files have?
The single image is saved at 600 dpi, the print sheet at 300 dpi. The value is stored in the file so print programs know the correct size.
Can I print the sheet on my own printer?
Yes. What matters is that the printer prints at actual size and doesn't fit the image to the page. 4 × 6 in photo paper makes this easiest.
Why is the background gray and not white?
The tool uses a light, neutral gray. If the authority explicitly requires a different background, take the photo in front of a suitable wall and leave the box unticked.
What if the photo doesn't fill the template completely?
Empty areas are filled with light gray too. Enlarge the photo until head and shoulders sit properly in the frame.
